The sundial above the church doorway has a thought-provoking motto “time passeth away like a shadow”. More fascinating perhaps is the fact that the church has no bell tower, which is most likely down to its benefactor, Cardinal Wolsey. When he fell from grace, it’s likely the money to complete the building dried up. Which is how you find a curious timber-framed cage in the churchyard, housing the bells intended for a tower which was never built.
