Founded in 1326 by the University’s Chancellor, Richard de Badew, Clare College is the second oldest of the thirty one Cambridge Colleges; only Peterhouse is older. Originally only offering space for two fellows the then named ‘University Hall’ fell upon financial hardship. Bolstered by generous donations from Elizabeth de Clare the college was re-founded in 1338 as Clare Hall. It remained named this until 1856 when it changed it’s name to Clare College and a new Clare Hall was established as a graduate college.
