Some of Southend's oldest and most fashionable areas sit high above the beach on the cliffs. The Cliff Lift is a fascinating relic of the town's past. It began carrying passengers down to the foreshore in 1912. Originally a single carriage carried up to 30 passengers along the 130-foot-long funicular railway. A new carriage was built in 1930 and again in 1959, when the upper and lower stations were also rebuilt.
