Founded in 1800 by Sir George Downing with money left to him by his father. The family were responsible for building Downing Street in London and in fact the college has one of the original doors from number 10 still hanging. William Wilkins, a great fan of the neo-classical architectural movement, designed the college. He designed the first Cambridge College to be completely on one site, a campus within the University.
