A congregation can be traced back to 1687 when a dissenting group met on Hog Hill (now Downing Street) to discuss matters of religious freedom. The church moved to its current site in 1873 and was named its current title. The new building was designed by James Cubitt and built in a Gothic style. The large tower above the doorway was intended as a symbol of non-conformity in Cambridge, both as a city and as a university.
