Emma's Well is situated at grid reference in the village of Great Amwell which is said to be named after the well. The spring used to be one of the sources of the neighbouring New River. At the entrance to the dried up hollow, there is a stone enscribed with the Quaker poet John Scott's poem Emma. There is much speculation as to how the well got its name, although most local stories tell of a young girl called "Emma" who was found drowned in the well.
