The largest remaining block of ancient woodland in Norfolk is Foxley Wood. In May 2002 it was awarded National Nature Reserve status which makes it one of the top nature reserves nationally. Thought to be some 6,000 years old it was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. For much of the last 1000 years it had been an important woodland but when demand for wood products dried up in the 20th century it fell into neglect. Norfolk Wildlife Trust purchased Foxley Wood in 1988.
