This memorial of one of Britain’s greatest explorers, John Franklin, has been at the centre of the town watching over events for over fifty years. Having journeyed to Southern Australia with his cousin, Matthew Flinders in the early 1800s, Franklin is most noted for his treks across the Arctic. At the age of 59 he made his last voyage to seek the North-west passage between Canada and the Arctic, but tragically died of disease and starvation.
