Built in 1873, Girton College was England’s first female residential college and is now one of Cambridge University’s largest colleges, admitting both men and women. Designed by Albert Waterhouse, the Girton is a fine example of Victorian Gothic-revival architecture. Its location on the outskirts of Cambridge, along with its extensive gardens, makes Girton a peaceful alternative to the centrally located colleges. It also houses a collection of artefacts relating to the women’s suffrage movement, and has its own Egyptian mummy, nicknamed Hermione.
