The downs are a range of low chalk hills extending several miles around the southeast perimeter of Cambridge. The unusual name is thought to have come from an ancient legend. It is said that once to giants, Gog and Magog fought each other to the death on the site and their dead bodies created hills. Today the area is a popular retreat for the people of Cambridge and is a conservation area. One of the highlights of the area is the annual kite festival that takes place on the downs, attracting visitors from across the country.
