Grimes Graves can be found located 7 miles NW of Thetford well signposted off the A134. This English Heritage site is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. The graves were originally named Grim’s Graves by the Anglo-Saxons, after the pagan god Grim. In 1870, when some of them were excavated, 5,000 year old flint mines were found that had been used to provide flint to make tools. Visitors can now climb down 30 foot to see one of the excavated shafts.
