The Ha’Penny Pier was built in 1954 and became the ticket office for the first continental ferries. The name of this Pier came about because of the 1/2d toll that was charged. Because of a fire in 1927, the Pier is only half its original length. The Quay has views of the harbour, Shotley, Orwell and Parkeston Quay; it was also a popular departure point for paddle streamers until WW1. The Pier now houses a visitor centre.
