The House in the Clouds was originally a water tank, designed in 1923, to provide sufficient water to the village of Thorpeness, in the absence of a mains water supply. It was deemed to be so unsightly that it was brilliantly disguised as a real house. The name was inspired by the first resident, Mrs. Mason, who wrote children’s poems, one of which was entitled “The House in the Clouds”. Today it is privately owned and let for holidays, and it is surely one of the most unusual houses in the country.
