When Ipswich Wet Dock opened in 1842, its area of enclosed water was the largest of its kind in Europe. Today, the old maritime buildings are being restored and modern new ones built as part of an exciting regeneration programme. Along with the old warehouses, inns and merchants' houses, there are now waterside galleries, restaurants and hotels. The Dock is also well known for its wildlife, which includes mute swans, cormorants, kingfishers and the occasional guillemot.
