For ten years, this was the home of Jean Ingelow. Poet, novelist, and children’s writer, she was one of the best selling and most acclaimed authors of the second half of the 19th century, with Tennyson and Ruskin among her fans. She lived here from 1834 to 1844, when her father was manager of the Ipswich and Suffolk Bank, which was in the same building. When the bank closed, the arch was built and Arcade Street beyond was built on the Ingelow’s garden.
