Originally part of the larger green area known as Midsommer Common, the green was annexed by the university in the late nineteenth century to be used as a park for recreation. At the turn of the century an avenue of London Plane and Horse chestnut trees were planted to give the park a more cultured feel. In 1922 the green hosted the prestigious Royal Agricultural Show. Today the area is usually used for recreation, sports and simply relaxing away from the busy city centre.
