This windmill is in the Buckinghamshire village of Lacey Green, on the brow of the hill, just off the Princes Risborough Road. Dating from 1650, it is thought to be the oldest smock mill in Britain. The name comes from the resemblance to a farmer’s smock. The mill was originally located in Chesham but was moved to its present location in 1821 where it is ideally sited to take advantage of the westerly wind. The mill was in continuous use until 1915, retaining the original 17th Century timber mechanism. It has recently been restored to full working order by volunteers of the Chiltern Society and is open to the public periodically from May to September. The nearby ‘Pink and Lily’ pub was a favourite haunt of the First World War poet Rupert Brook.
