Originally found outside the town boundary, there has been a place of worship on this site since at least the twelfth century. Situated next to Peterhouse College, the oldest of the Oxbridge colleges, the church has benefited from their kind donations and offers of restorations through the ages. Although Peterhouse built their own chapel in 1632, they continue to patronise St Mary’s today. The church went through several notable re-fits in 1741 and even more impressively after world renowned architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott restored the woodwork within in the 1800’s. The church although small attracts a lively and active congregation.
