Fishing boats were already working out of Lowestoft by the middle ages, when the town prospered from trade of Herring. The fish were known locally as Silver Darlings, and, according to the Domesday Book, residents paid rent to the landowner Hugh de Montfort in Herrings. Later in the 19th century, Samuel Morton Peto, the "maker of Lowestoft", built the current harbour, which provided mooring for 1000 boats. Today, the North Extension, which had fallen into disuse, is used by the oil and gas industry.
