There have been lighthouses at Lowestoft since around 1609. They were needed to guide vessels around the dangerous off the Lowestoft coast. Originally two lights were used, which when aligned, led boats down the Stamford Channel. The channel has now gone and only one light remains, the High Light. This was automated in 1975. A visitor centre here is open in the summer, and tours of the lighthouse are available.
