Sir Samuel Morton Peto, also called the “Maker of Lowestoft”, brought the railway to Lowestoft in the 19th century, and the town has never looked back. Along with the railway came the town's prosperity as a seaside resort and a harbour with easy access to the continent. The first train line was from Norwich. The station, accessed via Peto Way, is an imposing Italianate yellow-brick building. It was constructed in 1847.
