Magdalene College was founded in 1428 as a Benedictine hostel, before being re-founded in 1542 under the supervision of the Lord Chancellor Thomas Audley. It was Audley that gave the college its motto; ‘garde ta foy’ keep the faith. The beautiful college’s most famous son is London diarist Samuel Pepys whose books and papers were donated to the college after his death and are now housed there in the Pepys Library. On the banks of the river Cam, the college’s older buildings are representative of the ramshackle growth of the institution from a monks’ residence to the seat of learning we see today.
