Merchant Navy Memorial
Harwich, Essex CO12 - England, UK
  Share Location Map

The Merchant Navy Memorial in the Essex port town of Harwich is a striking reminder of the sacrifice made by merchant navy sailors throughout the course of the First and Second World Wars. In both conflicts many thousands of men were killed when their ships were torpedoed by German submarines and in recognition of their loss the four sided grey stone memorial was erected with a commanding view across the bay from the port of Harwich and onto Felixstowe.

This is a very striking memorial, made all the more striking by its location right alongside the seafront in Harwich. Across the water is the massive port of Felixstowe with the huge container ships similar to the one's that were lost during the war. The men who served on these were heroes and this simple obelisk is in their honour. I doff my cap to their heroic efforts and sacrifices. - Samantha Harris
