Mersea Island Museum is an independent museum that was established in 1976. It occupies a purpose-built premises in West Mersea, close to the parish church. The main permanent exhibitions in the museum are dedicated to the local activities of fishing, oystering, wild fowling and boat building. There is also a reconstructed traditional fisherman’s cottage in the museum that allows visitors to step back in time.
