Just east of Manningtree, on the Stour Estuary, is Mistley. Here you’ll find two towers standing beside each other. The gravestones are the clue to their identity. Designed by architect Robert Adam, they are part of a church built in 1776 as an addition to the estate of Richard Rigby, Paymaster General of the time. It was an oddity even then, having towers at both east and west ends, but the nave was pulled down less than 100 years later, leaving the two towers as the only evidence of Adam’s church.
