This castle is a national historic monument, protected by the Department of the Environment. There is believed to have been a castle on the sight since the Iron Age, but this re-construction is of the castle and Norman village that would have stood around the thirteenth Century. Baron Montfitchet, after which the castle and village is named was involved in a plot against King John and was one of the noblemen in attendance at the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. The castle and village is now a popular tourist attraction and important archaeological site open to the public.
