Newport Arch is a Roman gateway into the city, dating from around the 3rd Century AD. It is famous for being the oldest Roman archway in the country that still allows traffic to drive directly underneath it on a main road. It also has a postern for pedestrian traffic. There has only been one serious accident in its long history; in 1964 the arch was almost completely destroyed by a large lorry. Happily, much of the destruction was repaired.
