Sir Nicholas Bacon, Queen Elizabeth I’s Lord Keeper, was responsible for the construction of the immesnse mansion here in 1536. The property was twice visited by the Queen who was said to have loved the house and grounds. Only the ruins of the house remain sadly, but there is still clear evidence of the showy two storey porch and parts of the clock tower, chapel and hall.
