King Henry II built Orford Castle between 1163 and 1175 against the threat of coastal invasion and to strengthen his royal authority. When built the castle consisted of a long curtain wall linked via a number of flanking towers and a polygonal keep surrounded by a twin towered gatehouse. Today only the polygonal keep, known as the Great Tower, remains of the original royal castle. The castle is run by English Heritage and is open to the public.
