Built between 1895 and 1890 the Catholic Church is an imposing example of Gothic revival architecture set at the heart of the city. The church is constructed from Casterton, Ancaster and Combe Down Stone. Designed by Newcastle architects Dunn and Hansom, the church was built to commemorate the Catholic Martyrs who died in the sixteenth century. Many of the windows were destroyed after the church was directly hit by a bomb in 1941, but have been replaced and restored to their firmer glory.
