Rayleigh Mount was acquired by the National Trust in 1923 and represents the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle. Sweyn of Essex erected the first castle on this site that is listed in the Domesday Book. The distinctive defences have formed an attractive haven for wildlife and flowers in the heart of the town. In the summertime the castle is used as on open-air theatre.
