This first Century AD Roman well is situated at the heart of Lincoln’s prestigious uphill shopping area. Mostly overlooked by the usual pedestrian traffic, the well was once the centre of a Roman military fortress, and later, a public forum. According to archaeologists, the well was not backfilled until the Seventeenth Century. Nearby is the site of a number of churches of St. Paul-in-the-Bail, ranging in date from the Saxons to the Victorians.
