The common is the largest green area in the town and is used for many events as well as day-to-day leisure in the area. The Eastern side of the common features a turf maze of great antiquity and importance. The largest example of its kind in the world, it is one of only eight remaining turf mazes in the UK. The maze is basically circular and the path follows grooves cut in the turf, eventually leading to a mound in the centre. There was once a Yew tree at the centre of the maze but it was burnt down during Guy Fawkes celebrations in 1823. The original plans for the maze can be found in the Bodlien Library, Oxford.
