Southend-on-Sea is famous for its gardens, which date back to the 1700s. Southend Cliffs Gardens are Victorian, and among the most popular in the town. Highlights include stunning views of the Thames Estuary and its mudflats, winding woodland paths, specimen trees, exotic plants, such as agaves, and a war memorial by Lutyens. Since 2002 an ongoing programme of restoration, paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been underway, and the gardens are being slowly turned back into their original splendour.
