Southwold Lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1890. Before that, three local lighthouses did the job, until they were threatened by coastal erosion. In 1887, building began on their replacement. Today’s lighthouse is 30.8 metres high and was originally paraffin-powered. Electricity was installed in 1938 when the Lighthouse was also automated. Its 1500-watt light can now be seen for 18 nautical miles. Visitors can join a tour to the top of the lighthouse.
