Opened in 1900, Southwold Pier was built by the Coast Development Company as an embarkation point for its coastal steamers. The pier was partly destroyed on several occasions, both by the elements and also by a drifting sea mine, and following many attempts at restoration was re-opened in July 2001. Alongside several bars and cafes there is an amusement arcade which plays host to a selection of weird and wonderful home-made machines. But the most popular attraction is the copper water clock, which offers an hourly display of calibrated cascades and always draws a crowd.
