The Spalding Gentleman’s Society is one of the oldest learned socities that exists in the country. It was founded by Maurice Johnson in the early 18th Century and was intended to give a forum in which local academics and learned characters could discuss matters of importance, history and discovery. Members of the society included luminaries such as Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Hans Sloane, Alenander Pope and Alfred Lord Tenyson amongst many others. The small museum holds an interesting collection related to the early meetings of the society.
