The clocktower or Le clokkehouse was built between 1403 and 1412 by Thomas Wolvey and is England's only medieval town belfry. The clocktower contains the original "curfew" bell which dates from 1335. Queen Victoria's funeral in 1901 was the last time this bell rang out. The tower has a narrow spiral staircase of 94 steps leading to fine views over St Albans. The tower stands at 19.6 metres high and was restored in 1866. The clocktower is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
