This church is one of many situated around the central area of Cambridge. Close to some of the most famous colleges, it is in fact one of the oldest churches in the city. It is thought that the tower of St Benet’s was built in the eleventh century and actually predates the Norman conquests of England. If this is the case then the remaining tower certainly is the oldest remaining church in the region. The ‘tell tale’ signs that building is probably Saxon come from the stonework along the corners (known as long and short work) and the lathe worked windows aren’t traditionally Norman.
