One of Southwold's many seaside greens, St James' Green used to be the home of Southwold’s Coastguard Station. The original rigged mast here was used for signalling. A two-gun battery also stood here until 1811 when it was removed. The present guns are 18th-century castings recovered from shipwrecks in Sole Bay. They, and the present mast, were placed here by Southwold Town Council. Local craftsmen, S Brown and D Ball, did the work.
