Described by many as the Cathedral of Essex, this town church is a magnificent building that casts a shadow across the whole of picturesque Thaxted. The enormous stone structure is 183 feet long and 87 feet wide, which is unusually large for a parish church. Building began in 1340 but wasn’t completed until 1510. The church is exquisitely crafted within, with a fine collection of stained glass dating from 1340 – 1900. There are two large organs dating from 1825 and 1952, which can often be heard playing when choral services take place. The church is one of the centres of community life and as well as worship plays host to regular theatre productions and concerts by local groups and societies.
