A handsome church built around the 15th century, St Mary’s dominates the skyline of Bungay with its tall tower. Reports of an apparition in this imposing church are said to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. In 1577, Black Shuck, a legendary hellhound, reportedly appeared in the church, killed a man and a boy, made the tower fall through the roof and left, leaving behind scorch marks on the north door.
