Located at the centre of this charming Essex village, the windmill was built in 1787. For over a hundred years it was the main mill in the area, providing the surrounding villages with flour. New and faster methods of milling were introduced during the industrial revolution, spelling the end for working windmills in the area. The Stansted mill stopped work in 1910 and was quickly established as part of a long-term conservation project by the local council. Stansted Millers voluntary group act as custodians of the mill, offering tours of the building and selling souvenirs of the mill to help towards its upkeep.
