This grand square is as central to the life of Ipswich today as it's always been. For hundreds of years, it has hosted fairs, markets, meetings, and, in 1556, public burnings. That year, the Ipswich Martyrs were burned at the stake here. Some 90 years later the Widow Lackland suffered the same fate for alleged witchcraft. Today, the markets and meetings continue, with outdoor markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and the occasional farmers’ market.
