Some very wealthy horse breeders and racers who used their influence to acquired authority and prestige in the horse racing industry founded the Jockey Club in 1752. At the time they needed somewhere to meet and decided on a building known as the Coffee Room which was constructed on the site of the present Jockey Club premises in Newmarket High Street. Today the Jockey Club’s main headquarters have moved to London but they still use this impressive building.
