Many of Great Yarmouth’s grand riverfront houses were built for the town’s wealthy merchants. The wealthiest of them all lived in this one. John Andrews was the richest fish merchant in Europe, exporting herring around the world. He had this large house built in 1720. After his death it became the customs office for HM Customs and in 1984 it was bought by the Great Yarmouth Port and Haven Commissioners and used to house their Port Authority.
