The Royal Standard of England is the oldest free house in England and has served the public since the Saxons used the local well for brewing over 900 years ago. It’s the only pub in the country to bear this full title, King Charles II having agreed a name change from the Ship allegedly in gratitude for being sheltered here on his escape bid to France in 1651. There are highwaymen connections, too, with Dick Turpin said to have lodged here between sorties in Cut-throat Wood at nearby Holtspur.
