Conceived by Suffolk-born artist Maggi Hambling and constructed by local craftsmen Sam and Dennis Pegg, The Scallop is a visual and tactile sculpture which encourages people to sit and watch the sea. The four metre high stainless steel structure is dedicated to Benjamin Britten who used to walk along the beach in the afternoons. Taken from the Britten opera, Peter Grimes, and pierced through the steel to be read against the sky appears the inscription "I hear those voices that will not be drowned".
