Without a doubt one of the most ornate and impressive pieces of local architecture, the gatehouse of Thornton Abbey is one of the finest preserved and best known of all monastic buildings in England. Begun in the 1360s the gatehouse was enlarged and improved during the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381. At twenty-one metres in height, the gatehouse formed a formidibale defence to the treasures in the abbey beyond.
