Thorpeness Almshouses are an excellent example of the mock Tudor houses created by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie in the 1920s, as part of his private fantasy holiday resort. Ogilvie set out to create a fashionable resort “for people who want to experience life as it was when England was Merrie England”. Thorpeness was arguably the first model holiday village, the forerunner of themed resorts around the world, such as Disneyland. Ogilvie invited his friends and colleagues’ families to stay in the all-inclusive holiday homes, while the necessary serving staff were accommodated in the almshouses.
